The Chic List: Cherry Blossoms, Human Trafficking, and Endometriosis

The best things to do, eat, read, watch and listen to this week.

DO

If you are in D.C. this weekend, go see the cherry blossoms. The National Park Service said that 70 percent of the remaining Yoshino cherry blossoms had reached the puffy white stage, the last of the tracked stages before full bloom. So even if it’s probably not going to be a banner year for the cherry blossoms this year and they’re more dinged up than usual, they’re still going to be put on a beautiful spectacle. More details on the Cherry Blossom Festival here.

The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit by Michael Finkel: In 1986, Christopher Knight stepped into the Maine woods and stayed there for 27 years, eking out an existence by burgling local cabins for food, batteries, and clothes, leaving no trace as he moved through the wilderness. The “North Pond Hermit” grew into a local legend, reasonably feared by some; others saw him as a harmless eccentric and sometimes left supplies on their porches for the taking, just to save everyone the trouble. After he was finally caught breaking into a camp, Knight became a minor sensation, drawing the interest of journalist Michael Finkel, who turned his interviews with the sometimes combative recluse into a book.

WATCH

To Walk Invisible: The Brontë Sisters: To Walk Invisible depicts the evolution of secluded, dutiful clergyman’s daughters into authors of the most controversial fiction of the 1840s. The drama stars Finn Atkins as Charlotte, who shocked society with her edgy epic, Jane Eyre; Chloe Pirrie as Emily, author of the darkly gothic and disturbing Wuthering Heights; and Charlie Murphy as Anne, whose penned the true-to-life love story The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

Based largely on Charlotte’s letters, the film follows the Brontë sisters in the eventful three-year period that saw them rise from ordinary, unmarried women, taking care of the household and their widowed father, to the secret authors of the world’s most sensational literature.

The drama airs Sunday on PBS’s Masterpiece series. Take a look at the trailer below.

Check out the new series on CNN called Mostly Human with Laurie Segall, Senior Technology Correspondent and a journalist. The six-part series is mostly about the disturbing and even dangerous side of the digital age. Segall investigates smartphone addiction; the “secret” of Silicon Valley, where mental illness has become a widespread problem; the Ashley Madison data breach, which resulted in a public list of names of millions of people cheating on their spouses; a British-born computer hacker who became an ISIS supporter and was eventually killed by a drone strike in Syria; and the ways in which people are using digital technology to try to deal with or avoid death.
